Wedman said. “It basically translates to ‘Spoiled Chef’”. Best Life OKC got to participate in Mollycoddled Hash Slinger’s live new flavor release, which was so fun! I asked Melissa about her new flavor she launched and the inspiration behind it.

“Back in August of 2017, we actually offered a subscription box service, which allowed us to get creative and have a new limited edition flavor once a month,” Wedman said. “So the brown butter and honey came about back then. Honestly, just because brown butter is not appreciated and utilized in cooking as much as it should be because of its flavor and its simplicity.”

In April of this year, the candy company got offered to contribute to a weekly small business highlight on Good Morning America’s website and Instagram. One of her friends suggested submitting her information; about a week later she found out her company would be featured through Good Morning America.

“A lot kind of went into it in a very short amount of time, but we were so honored and blessed to be a part of that,” Wedman said. “Each week, they're highlighting three new, small businesses on their website to help promote small businesses that are getting creative and struggling at the same time due to COVID-19.”

Melissa grew up loving food alongside most of her close family. Her father especially loved caramel. It was something they would often bond together over. Unfortunately, Melissa lost her dad nine years ago to heart issues. On the second Christmas after his passing, Melissa decided to make some rum caramels in honor of her dad. She was out of rum but luckily had whiskey on hand. After about 10 batches she had the flavor and texture down, and the salted whiskey caramel was born.

“ My dad loved caramel,” Wedman said. “People either love or hate caramel, but I like to try to educate people that most of the caramel you eat now, isn't real caramel. It's loaded full of corn syrup. So the texture and flavors off. It's just not what caramel was a hundred years ago. Our process alone now helps extend the shelf life. We've had to tweak ingredients here and there without adding any preservatives to help. Homemade caramels are good for about one to two weeks; ours are good for 16 weeks now.”

Melissa’s husband is a pharmacist and was able to help play part as chemist when creating recipes. Most caramel is made using evaporated milk or another off milk product and 90 percent corn syrup. Mollycoddled Hash Slinger caramels are made using real butter, heavy cream and sugar with a small amount of corn syrup.

Mollycoddled Hash Slinger emphasizes using local businesses because Wedman’s father made sure to always support American made. Honey is also harvested in Oklahoma and even the pecans are harvested in Northeastern Oklahoma.

“My vision would be to have a window into our kitchen, so people could come in and watch the candy be made and packaged,” Wedman said. “Then of course sell other, made in Oklahoma products in addition to our own. For right now, our products can be ordered on our website to be shipped nationwide.”

The caramels and candies are in a few stores in the Metro area. Gift clients and referrals with one of many different boxes available. For a limited time you can preorder from the website then get it delivering on coordinating days and areas for free with a $25 or more purchase. They’re delivering anywhere from Guthrie to Norman, and Yukon to Choctaw and Midwest city. Melissa makes sending gifts simple, unique and delicious.
